Riga Declaration kicks off eSkills for Jobs 2015-2016 campaign in Europe

On 13 March over 250 participants joined in the official launch of eSkills for Jobs campaign at the high-level conference in Riga. The eSkills for Jobs campaign is a response to the growing demand for ICT-skilled professionals which is currently not met in Europe.

The campaign uses the expertise of professionals who have seized the opportunities of digitalisation. Such expertise is necessary as all future jobs will require eSkills. Students and citizens alike must be prepared to improve their command of information and communication technology (ICT).

The conference held under the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union underlined the need to improve the image of digital careers and promote digital across all sectors. During web streamed sessions panellists analysed changes in digital technologies and discussed issues germane to ICT and the contribution to employment and every area of economic life. The conference drew much needed attention to the latest e-leadership and ICT professionalism, vital for Europe’s growth.

The stakeholders’ commitment to drive further the development of eSkills and use them as a fuel for growth and job creation was certified in the policy declaration adopted at the end of the conference. The Riga Declaration provides 10 essential principles that guide efforts in equipping Europe’s workforce and citizens with eSkills in time for the upcoming Digital Single Market strategy. DIGITALEUROPE, European Schoolnet, Latvian Communications and Information Technologies Association (LIKTA), European E Skills Association, Council of European Professional Informatics Societies, Telecentre Europe signed the declaration during the high-level conference.

To date over 100 organisations have endorsed the Declaration – if you would like to join them in putting eSkills to the forefront of European policymakers’ agenda, you can endorse the Riga Declaration here: http://eskillsforjobs.lv/about-riga-declaration/.
